Exploring Jane's Journey towards Herbal Wellness
At Four Elements, we believe that the journey toward herbal wellness begins with our deep connection to the earth. Our founder, Jane Hawley Stevens, has dedicated her life to understanding the profound relationship between nature, healing, and sustainability. This journey led her to create our line of organic herbal products designed to support your body’s systems and foster a sustainable future for our planet.
The Roots of Organic Herbal Wellness
Jane Hawley Stevens' journey into herbal wellness began with a personal revelation: her curiosity about natural remedies led her to discover that the plants in her garden could provide comfort for her children's ailments. Jane's son suffered from consistent ear aches, but she discovered the magic of herbal remedies to help him. Mullein flowers console that situation and support healthy ear function. Because of this experience, Jane formulated the Mullein Flower Ear Oil. This insight sparked the creation of Four Elements Organic Herbals in 1987. Jane has been cultivating over 100 medicinal herbs on her and her husband, David's, 130-acre certified organic farm in the pristine Baraboo Bluffs of Wisconsin for over 30 years. The farm has been certified organic since 1990, and has an emphasis on sustainable agriculture by enriching the soil annually with organic matter and following all national organic standards.
Jane's approach is deeply rooted in natural rhythms; she learned the art of lunar harvesting by following the Old Farmer’s Almanac for over 30 years. This opened the door to discovering how lunar phases can enhance herb potency. Her knowledge of gardening by the moon informs the small-batch production of over 70 herbal wellness products at Four Elements, crafted from recipes that reflect Jane's decades of herbal wisdom.
The Essence of Moon Harvesting
Moon harvesting is all about gardening influenced by the moon cycle through the zodiac cycle. Jane has practiced these growing practices for 20 years, following her Gardening By The Moon Calendar. This calendar will be available for purchase this spring, so you too can know the best time to sow seeds, plant root crops, harvest, and add value to your crops. By harvesting during specific lunar phases, we can enhance the potency and energy of our herbs, ensuring that they retain their natural benefits. When we harvest our herbs, we make sure to do so at the right moment, often during a full moon, when the sap is rising to enhance the vitality of plants. This method not only optimizes the quality of our products but also promotes a deeper connection with nature, allowing us to honor the rhythms of the earth.

Sustainable Practices in Action
Each of our products is crafted using organic ingredients, harvested with respect for the earth, and made in small batches to maintain the integrity of our herbal offerings. We start the transplants in the greenhouse, then plant them out in the field, grow them organically, mulch them, harvest them, dry them, and finally the products are brought down to the apothecary located in North Freedom, Wisconsin.
Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond the sourcing of ingredients. We ensure that every aspect of our production process is Eco-friendly. We believe that wellness should not come at the expense of the environment; rather, it should enhance it. Nature is here to help us on our healing path. The more we can engage the better off our health will be.
